The statement comes at a time when the service itself, owned by Chinese companies, has come under attack for censoring content and controlling data from a large number of US users. On Monday, U.S. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo told Fox News that "we are definitely considering" banning Chinese social media apps, including tiktok.

Tiktok's departure could herald the retreat of social media companies. Before that, Internet giants from Facebook to Google and twitter all opposed China's national security legislation in Hong Kong, which gives the Hong Kong government broad powers to regulate the online and public sphere. The US companies said they would not process data requests from the Hong Kong government because of concerns that the new security law might criminalize protests.
